Two Thoughts from Old Songs

Old songs bring good feelings and memories. An old song reminded me of a girlfriend long ago who caused such a fuss. Forty years have passed since then. In the turning of the sun and moon, she had so little impact on my life. For a little while some four decades past, she was the biggest issue of the day. I had not seen here in those many years since, but recently discovered where life has taken her. Suffice to say that she is not someone to add to my circle of acquaintances. She is a reminder that in the turning of the celestial bodies, how much do the issues of the present really matter?

Another old song reminded me of something good. There are dark places in the soul that are like the place from which a refreshing spring originates. They are the origin of beautiful things. There is no turmoil there. There is nothing wicked or painful or cruel. Reaching into those places connects with an essence that makes things great. Where the link is made, there is harmony and love, beauty and art.

Long-range thinking

The issues that seem so important today often become the non-issues of the future. Many of the things which people dispute fanatically will settle themselves in time. We need to ask ourselves if the heated issues will stand the test of time? Instead of fighting over things destined to become trifles, we might better apply ourselves to the things that will endure.

Peace

One day, if you are fortunate, you come to get a wider perspective. Where do things stand in comparison to the turning of the Sun and Moon and stars? Just how important are those issues that keep you up at night?

On one of the Heathen boards, there has been a flap over racism. We have seen this too many times. On one side are the folks who hate and on the other are folks who hate the haters. Od forbid that you do not agree with them 100%, or they will rail at you and resort to name-calling. Their stunt to conceal the insult is to imply that you are dishonorable or a poor Heathen if you do not agree with them.

The only dishonor would be to fall for that crap.

Whether you hate people for some reason or hate the folks who hate people, .it is all hate. Whatever side of the issue they fall, they make a lot of noise but in the end, nothing gets done. There is a lot of effort to get individuals to join their various sides, yet to what avail? In the end, they all end up wallowing in a vitriolic slurry pit of hate with all the nastiness that accompanies it.

How does all that stand when viewed against turning of the Sun and Moon and stars?

Angry people abide in turmoil. They make some of it and they seek the rest. There is always another battle, another argument, another feud. There is always someone who is going to get in their crosshairs. I believe that most of these people cannot see a life without bickering. Many are so motivated by their ongoing drama that they seek to draw everyone around them into it.

I do not have any friction here. I am, not involved in any feuds, spats or wars. Granted, there are people and groups I do not like. My policy is that if you do not like someone, then do not bother with them. Life is better without them. Their opinions and activities are of no concern. Focus on the people you like.

“When you fixate on one truth to the exclusion of all others, that truth becomes a lie and you become a fanatic.”

The folks who crusade against the haters are as wrong as those whose crusade is hate. After a while they all sound the same.

Let’s be civil. Let’s not be so quick to jump down someone’s throat. Give the other guy the benefit of the doubt. At least give him time to explain himself. You might not like some of his views, likes and dislikes, but that does not automatically make him a bad person. If he is a jerk, that will show soon enough and you can respond accordingly.

Let the judgment make itself. After all, those who judge too harshly tend to repel the very people who might have been a bright spot in their lives.

It is easy to be fair to people you like. It is a mark of character to be equally fair to people you dislike. You do not have to like them or try to accommodate them or help them, but it is a mark of spiritual maturity to be fair.

Peace, folks. Life has enough turmoil without trying to make some of your own.

Political Failures

Let me preface today’s discussion by stating that I do not intend to endorse a political party here. I am not promoting the party line of the Democrats, Republicans or Tea party. I am just stating the facts that I see before me.

The new Jobs program promoted by the President has gotten a lot of interest. For me, the problem is that so did all his other programs, from continuing to bail out the brokers to his economic stimulus plans. The brokers are bailed out and our economy is worse than ever. All the banks did was raise their fees. The economic stimulus program gave us some money but it did not last long enough to improve the economy. Most of us spent it catching up on bills. Then there is the health care issue. The administration put the economy on a back burner to sell us a health care plan whose only enduring effect was to divide the nation. Here we were being ram-rodded with a health plan most of us did not want, all the while the economy has been slip-sliding away.

I look at all the things this administration has tried and I ask myself: has any of it helped me? Not that I can see. In fact, some of it actually hurt me at a time of financial fragility. One thing is for sure. I am not going to vote for this guy in 2012.

Have we not had enough? Eight years of George Bush was bad enough. Bush was a recovering alcoholic on an eight-year dry drunk. He did some very stupid things. People hoped Obama would restore sanity to government. Many took his inauguration as a sign that something truly special was happening. Two million people at the Inauguration and not a single arrest. It was a fluke. Look at the facts. The Obama administration has not been a roaring success. Our economy is worse than ever and the health care plan will only compound the damage.

We have illegal immigrants holding small towns hostage, and Obama’s administration does nothing to help. I see it here. In my town, over 65% of the students are the anchor babies of illegals. My taxes rise because of the schools and extra police work and courts. My hospital bills rise because of the unpaid bills left by illegals. They are an added tax on my community. Obama not only does nothing, but his homeland security director wants to give them a free ride. Once again, the Obama administration is doing me and millions of other Americans real harm. This is a case of taxation without representation.

It is clear that Obama’s platform is to push the Democratic party line. That health care bundle was a Democratic plum long before Obama got elected. Even if a different Democrat runs for office, many of the same policies will re-emerge. The only way things will improve with Democrats is if the Democratic party changes its programs.

The Republicans are no better. They have had control of Congress for over a year now and the results are nonexistent. They have not improved things one bit.

The Tea Party makes a lot of noise, but they have not made any improvements, either.

The bottom line is that none of them have done anything to improve our bottom line. The only change we have experienced is that they have hurt our bottom line. There has been nothing out of Washington that has improved our situations.

The unspoken result of bipartisan politicking is that both parties are sending us their hacks rather than sending us effective leadership. That is no surprise. In 2000, the Democrats ran Al Gore when they could have chosen the kind of candidate who could win easily. They did it again with Kerry, who was the personification of “unelectable” on a national level. The Republicans saddled McCain with Sarah Palin when they should have chosen a candidate with whom the people would feel comfortable. These folks care less about good candidates than they do about taking care of their party’s favorites.

Use a sheet of paper. Make three columns and list them as Obama, Boehner’s Crews and Tea Party. Part one is to write down all of the things they have done that have actually helped you. Part two is to write down all the things that have hurt you, be it economically, socially, quality of life, etc. Take ten minutes to do it, and them put it away for a few hours. Come back later and look at it. You will get the point.

As practical people, we see that we have no control over the buffoonery that passes for politics. We can only control ourselves. It is up to us to see the tide that is coming and to prepare for it accordingly. To rely on the politicians is a false hope. We need to rely on ourselves to weather the storm as best we can. Likewise, when a politician’s policies have hurt us, then we have to make it known that it is unacceptable. The surest way to send a message is to refuse to give him our support. We might not be able to control them, but we can stand up for ourselves by refusing to support them.

Once again, we the people are on our own. Our government has dropped the ball time and time again. Neither party has succeeded in improving conditions. There is a lot of talk but no results. We cannot count on either party to present us with acceptable candidates, but we can count on ourselves to thrive in spite of them.

*********

The only politicians who seem to be doing something are the Governor and our Congressman. Gov. Chris Christie is actually taking on the unions and the state workers who milk the treasury dry. He is working on the state economy and getting results. Rep. Chris Smith has actually come to our town to help us on issues regarding the local post office. He has also been very effective on veterans issues. They get the kind of results that are helpful to me. It can be done, so why aren’t the people in Washington doing it?

The Nothing Factor

Back in 1986 I hit a combination of events that left me in very bad straits, I was broke, homeless, physically ill from an injury, and my job laid off all the newer people, including me. I credit the real cause as being spiritual: I had asked for all wisdom. Little did I realize that the price of wisdom is pain.

I paid attention as I went through the journey of having nothing. One of the things that was re-arranged rapidly was priority. Having very little, I had to figure out what was necessary and what was not. Wow! I discovered that I could easily live without my favorite TV shows and access to a telephone. I did not have to eat fussy meals and I did not have to own any of the accessories that some folks consider essential. Clean clothes, a neat appearance, a place to sleep and a source of food were the real essentials.

While my life is not Spartan, I live with greater simplicity since those days.
Do you?

Our modern lives are interrupted countless times by images and voices telling us what we need. The advertisers and marketers are a constant stream of babble promoting myriad things and services and concepts. They encourage us to buy their goods. They even invent reasons why we should buy their goods. I call it the Fiction of the Merchants.

Twenty-five years ago, we did not have “body wash” or “4g” or “palm pilots”. Obviously, we did not need them in order to live back in 1986. What are they? Body wash is diluted soap in a bottle. 4g is just a fancy form of wireless phone service, and palm pilots are pocket computers. Your life will not come to a screeching halt if you do not have any of these. Believe me: they are not necessities.

The only cell phone in the family belongs to my wife. It is her emergency phone that she takes when she goes to work. I do not have one. 4g is meaningless to me and a palm pilot has little relevance to my life. I do not see a need to instantly respond to every message that is sent to me. Even my computer is still using the old XP software and I have no desire to upgrade.

You do not need a smart phone. Your life will not degenerate into savagery if you live without a game system hooked to your TV. You will not be left behind if you miss the latest movie or latest music CD. And to be blunt, people have been finding their way to their destinations long before Tom-Tom, Garmin or Expedia maps. People have been reading books without Kindle. People have been eating at restaurants long before Macdonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell or Friendlys. You can eat better and spend less at a diner than buying the fast foods blasted at you by commercials.

These are tough times. Your money should be going to necessities if you are behind the financial 8-ball. Necessities for the 21st century include

Clean, neat clothes

Good, healthy food

Cleanliness – and a regular bar of soap will last longer and get you clean. The same goes for laundry. The regular laundry soap is all you need.

A safe place to sleep.

Everything else is icing on the cake.

Take back your wallet and your mind. Do not let advertisers trick you into thinking you need the latest thing. Ignore the images and voices broadcast at you. Look at what is right in front of you. Buy what you choose, not what they tell you to want. Likewise, you determine your needs, not them. Do not let them trick you into thinking you need something that is not a necessity.

The merchants do not care that this is a hard economy and that you have to be frugal. Their one and only task is to encourage you to buy their wares whether you need them or not. Do not give them the power to influence you. You decide what you need.

It is that bad

As if things could not get worse, our dryer is kaput and has to be replaced. We thought it could be fixed. Another gift of Hurricane Irene. We already lost the washer. Then there’s the piles of stuff we had to trash. Add the fact that I am physically ill, and it is the icing on the cake and the cherry on top. I will write lessons when I feel better.
