The Ins and Outs of the Mannar Rune

The Mannar Rune cycle is simplicity itself. It pulses inward, into itself. Then it pulses outward. Think of a ball that shrinks to a small dot, and then expands to a huge sphere. The cycle is a continuous in – out – in –out. However, the ball is not shrinking. It is moving into itself, then moving out from its center.

Mannar is a Rune of identity. One of its mysteries is the balance of Who a person is, as opposed to What he is. The Who is the individual personality. The What includes the many roles he fulfills. For instance, Ernest is a personable man with an agreeable dispostion. That would be the Who as the unique individual. Ernest is a father, a mid-level manager and a golfer. Those roles are the What of Ernest. If Ernest were your friend, you would be dealing mostly with the Who. If you were an employee on Ernest’s job, you would be dealing mostly with the Ernest’s role of manager. That is the What. The Who is the inner core of a person and the What is the exterior. We can see that this analogy is much like the cycle that goes to the inner and then to the outer.
