The Humane Choice
The decent treatment of people and animals is a Heathen ideal. In existing vestiges of old lore, one finds many a precept stressing a humane attitude. The Havamal is key among these sources. Traditions of hospitality, generosity and practicality encourage us to treat others well.
Humane treatment begins at home. Those who live in a true spirit of Heathenism would never abide abuse of any kind. Their families are healthy and happy. Kindness and togetherness thrive. The same goes for treatment of pets and livestock. Only a fool would abuse the animals under his care. Why would any sane individual want to damage the animals on which he relies? Even food animals are treated humanely right up to the moment of their demise. Cruelty to people and to animals in our care is cowardly.
Heathenism encourages us all to live in accord with our highest ideals. A large part of our expression of these principles manifests in out treatment of others. Fairness and a genuine respect for the well-being of others are expressions of the strength we derive from our Heathen ideals.
