Tyr

It struck me recently that several of my activities could be considered service to Tyr. How often people forget the old God whose province includes War and Competition. Tyr is not just the deity of soldiers. Like the other Gods, he is a friend of mankind and a benefactor.

Over the years, I have come to appreciate Tyr’s direct approach. He does not mince words. This is a God of facts and action. As well as being the God of tactics and strategy, Tyr is focused on everything practical.

Odin is focused mainly on the individual. Tyr is concerned with the good of the tribe, the community, the nation. This is mythically symbolized by Tyr sacrificing his hand so that the Fenris Wolf could be bound. It is the sacrifice one makes for the safety of the people when they are faced with a threat. Odin is the “me” to Tyr’s “we.” They make a formidable team.

Tyr ought not be overlooked. Heathens do well to remember and honor him. It is a great benefit to you to know Tyr. He is a stalwart friend and a wise guide, every ready to reveal the plain facts. With Tyr, you always get the unvarnished truth, whether you like it or not.
