Wyrd Changes
While researching something on the Internet, I came across an article written by an old acquaintance. We had been friends about thirty years ago, but parted company on bad terms. We were opposites in many ways. Jimmy was the student who put education first. His favorite subject was military history, especially the British army. I never valued grades or honors or academic accolades. My interests were in the practical world. At the time we went our separate ways, Jimmy was a strait-laced academic type and I was drifting into antisocial territory.
Imagine my surprise when I looked on the Internet and discovered that Jimmy was a colonel who had commanded a support brigade in Iraq. There was a picture of Jimmy as colonel, at some little ceremony. He was wearing those new pajama-like fatigues. They did not get a good picture of his face, but from what I could see he was showing a little grey. Who would have thought the professional student would have become a career soldier? But then, who would have thought that I would be come the mystic, visionary and magician?
Life and Wyrd conspire to launch us all in different directions. Many times, people end up doing things they never expected in their youth. We are forged by our choices, our Wyrd and the world around us. So it is that one becomes a soldier, one a mystic, one a doctor and one a street sweeper. Most of us end up doing things we did not anticipate in our younger days. Life can be quite a surprise.
It is good to be reminded that the Life we thought we wanted is not always the Life we get. Maybe that is for the better. Many of our youthful aspirations would have been less than satisfying, had we actually done them. If we allow it, Wyrd will bring us to our own.
I hope Jimmy is happy in the life he has chosen. I know that I am content to be a man of the spiritual and magickal realm. Call it wizardry, religion, galdra or hexerei, but this is what I am. Hopefully you are doing the thing that suits you best. There is contentment in finding and accepting one’s station in Life.
