Runes and Tunes Exercise

This all came about by accident. I was posting on a forum and had a typo: Tunes instead of Runes. Someone with a good sense of humor made light of it. Yes, it is funny. It also got me to sharing a few exercises I had cooked up for using music to get closer to understanding the Runes. These exercises are not as serious as those I have been giving for each individual Rune. Approach these musical exercises with a light touch. There is an additional exercise here that was not posted on the forum. Here are the exercises:

1)When you work each Rune, pay attention to your inner senses. On some level, part of your mind is probably associating a certain sound to each Rune. See if you can focus on that sound. It may be several sounds for each Rune.

2) Think of some of your favorite songs. Can you associate a song with a Rune? Ask yourself questions, such as “Would a song like “Saturday in the Park”" be more Dag or Wunjo?” “Help by the Beatles is a fast-moving song, but is there a touch of Naud in the lyrics?” “Does Ringo Starr’s “No No” song have a smooth beat like Raido or is it more the galloping pace of the Eh (Horse) Rune?” Make up your own questions for songs you know. This will be highly personal to you.

3) Imagine a sheet of light, much like the Northern lights. As you think of a Rune, think of that sheet of light in the color you associate with that Rune. Now think of sounds associated with that Rune. As you mentally hear the sounds, how does the sheet reflect them? Does it shimmer? Do the colors flow or undulate? Does it shake or roll? Imagine the sheet of colored light moving with the sounds.

4) Think of songs and how they make you feel. What feeling does a particular song evoke in you? Which Rune would you associate with that feeling? For added impact, think of the sound each feeling would have. Compare them with the sounds you associate with the Runes.

Music, especially popular songs, are a sort of mile marker of our lives. By looking at the songs in terms of the Runes, we gain in sight into ourselves. There is also greater appreciation of why we relate to the Runes as we do.
