Feeling Urus
Several days ago, I listed some simple exercises to get you feeling closer to the Fe Rune. Today I am giving you exercises for the Urus Rune. This is the rune of the Wild Ox, of Strength, of independence and of every wild place and thing. These exercises will make Urus more tangible to you.
Exercise 1: Push something weighty across a table or floor with one hand. It need only be five or ten pounds. Notice the expenditure of energy you make. Feel for the power that come up to enable you to push the item. Life it and again feel for the force. That burst of strength is Urus.
Exercise 2: Go to a place where power is used. Watch the heavy equipment at work on a construction site. Note how pure force is exerted by these machine. The bulldozer uses its weight and motive power to push mounds of dirt. The power shovel uses pure motive power to scoop dirt. You can see applied force in cranes, front loaders, and most other heavy machines. Another thing to see is a powerful pulling motor, such as a semi-truck or locomotive. Though both are linked to Raido, their pulling power is Urus.
Exercise 3: Observe a large wild animal. You can go to a zoo, go to the wilds, or even use a documentary on wildlife. An elephant, hippo, wildebeest, moose, bear, lion, or other large beast is a lesson on Urus. The best examples are those that are solitary. Note how each lives according to its own nature, without regard to the rule of man or any other artificial condition. It may adapt to its circumstances, but it never loses its own wild nature. Urus is that independence and wildness.
Substitute Exercises: Spend time in a place that is considered wild. Go to a woods, mountain, desert, seaside or other place that is relatively untouched by Mankind. Look about. Try to get a feel for the unconditioned place. Notice how it grows and lives on its own, without interference. Appreciate the “unsafe” nature of wild places.
An example of Urus is found in arm wrestling or any other contest of strength. It is a contest of strength, pitting one against another. As a contestant you get a double portion of Urus. There is the strength you expend, and there is the strength expended against you.
One aspect of Urus is the ability to “hold.” A game such as “king of the hill” is an exercise in Urus. The Urus Rune is the force that allows a person to hold his ground, maintain his position, and hold on to that which is his. Look at examples where people have “held on” in adverse circumstances.
The “horse stance” of Asian fighting is very much Urus. The feet are supposed to “grip” the ground and hold their place.
