One Hit Wonders

A big part of popular music is the “one hit wonder”. That is a band or musician who makes one very popular song. No other “hit” songs follow. Usually he or they fade out of sight quickly. And just as often, the song continues to live on.

One hit wonders pop up from time to time amid the stream of musicians who turn out song after song. They add a dash of individual flair to the world of pop music. We remember those songs for years, long after the group or individual musician has faded from view. Whether it is one hit or many, a hit is a hit.

There are people who are called upon to perform time after time, be it entertainment or in the everyday world. They come and deliver one excellent job after another. There are also those who only come to the fore once. We see them, see their work, and then they move on. Perhaps they came to do that one job, then to resume a very different life elsewhere. Be it music, art, science, politics or any other human endeavor, the one hit wonders leave their mark. Had they never tried, we would be the poorer for it.

We all do our part in this thing we call life. We may be called upon to do well many times, and we may only have to do it once. That is a matter of Wyrd. Sometimes our one big hit overshadows the rest of our lives. Sometimes we make many hits in one area of our lives, and in another area only get the make one big hit. It is as if we come out of our own place in the world, make a hit, and then go back.

We see one hit wonders for their musical work, but do we thing of the rest? What of the ones who fade from the spotlight after making one hit as a musician, only to make multiple hits as a parent or worker or neighbor? Do we all do our own variation on that theme? This is something to consider.

We need the one hit wonders as much as the steady performers. They all contribute to the good. Better to make one hit than to make no hits at all. Some must shine every day, and some only need shine once. The rest is all a matter of Wyrd.
