You are a Success

Some years ago in another town, I was invited to a “business proposition” by the fellow whose father owned a local pizzeria. He assured me that it would impress me. However, he refused to tell me the name of it. He explained that I would learn all that at the presentation. I weighed my options. This fellow had always been well-intentioned. Based on what I knew of him, the worst that might happen would be that the presentation was a bust. I agreed to go. Of course, I still brought along a heavy case of skepticism and a few extra dollars in case I had to make my own way home.

He drove to another neighborhood. The meeting was being held in an apartment. On one table was a variety of products. Several men in suits sat around, waiting for the presentation to begin. They were obviously not used to wearing suits on a daily basis.

What intrigued me was their conversation. “I’ll be a success when…” and “Once I get that, I will be a success…” and “If I can do that, I will be a success…”

The presentation itself turned out to be a pyramid kind of thing called networking, and the company was a notorious outfit. I had seen those kind of pyramid things before. This would be my first and last time here. The others were folks who had attended several of these presentations and who intended to attend more of them.

What intrigued me about their talk of “I will be a success”? Two things. First, I knew that I was already a success. By that point in my life, I had overcome several obstacles and accomplished difficult goals. There was no “I will be a success.” Mine was “I am a success”

That brings up the second point. These men were tying their success to some far-off events. Most of it was the acquisition of some thing. They were so busy looking at dreams of future success that they failed to see any success in the present. None of them thought of such things as “I am a success because I provide for my family,” or “I am a success because I am improving my life,” or “I am a success because I am loved by wonderful people.” They were tying their success to possibly making some sales goal or getting a fancy car or moving to a better town.

When are you a success? Are you a success today? Take a good look. There are probably several things you have done that make you a success. Accept the fact of your success today. Do not be like those men who tie their success to dreams and trinkets. You do not have to wait for some trinket to fall in your lap to be successful. Your success has already begun!
