Heimdall Bridge

In ancient times, a man’s reputation grew if he built a bridge. The landscape of Scandinavia and Germany is filled with brooks and streams, gullies and rills. A bridge made travel easy and comfortable. People could cross a waterway and remain dry. They could bypass a gorge.

One of the things symbolized by the Gyfu Rune is a bridge. The Rune symbolizes a Gift and the Crossroads. A bridge that is crosses a waterway is itself part of a crossroad. Both the bridge and the waterway are routes for travel. One is traversed on foot and carts, the other in boats. Think about it: the crossing of land and water routes is a unique crossroads.

The bridge connects two places. It is the way that one can travel from one to the other. This is very much like a gift, which connects two people. The bridge symbolizes the passage of a gift from one to another.

Gyfu is the gift and the route it travels. It is that which joins two things together. The bridge is a great symbol of these things.

************

Between Belmar and Avon by the sea, three bridges are conspicuous. There is a drawbridge at the inlet, another at the main street, and beside it a railroad bascule bridge. These bridges accommodate both the land and water traffic. They close to let vehicles pass, and open to allow taller boats to sail by. For me, they are like old friends. I have crossed those drawbridges many times, in cars, on bicycles and on foot.

Crossing a bridge honors Heimdall. Remember that whenever you have to cross a bridge. Your passage means more than just a ride from one place to another.
