Faith
How many times has someone presented you with a doubtful proposition, and then asked you to “…take it on faith”? In other words, they want you to believe in something that has not yet been proven reliable. Another word for it is blind faith. Blind faith means believing even when there is no evidence to support belief.
Christianity is rife with blind faith, thanks to its scriptures. Their avatar, Jesus, is supposed to have told his followers that the best blessings are for those who believe without seeking proof. Many Christians take that as the definition of faith: belief without proof. Does that sound like faith or gullibility?
Blind faith is not real faith. Real faith believes because it has satisfactory proof. It is solid because it rests on the bedrock of consistent experience. Take the soldier who had faith in his rifle, because it always performs when he needs it. There is the baker who has faith in his favorite brand of flour, because it always bakes the way he wants. Then we can think of faith in one’s friends because they have always proven loyal. Real faith knows why it believes.
Heathenism rests on the bedrock of real faith. We believe because we get proof to validate our belief. We believe because of results. This is far, far better than believing when there is no proof in sight. We believe because we KNOW. That is far better than believing because we HOPE.
The proof is in the pudding, and faith is in the knowing. That is faith!
