Hidden Realms

Several times, I had worked in Manhattan. A couple of my jobs in the 1970s involved maintaining equipment and making deliveries. The work included bringing equipment and supplies into various office buildings.

If you have ever been in the larger office buildings in Manhattan, you may never have seen a delivery being made. You see the lobby, the elevators, the various floors and people going to and fro. What you rarely see are workmen bringing in equipment or supplies.

Do they make deliveries only at night, after the buildings are closed? No, they are made only during the day when the offices are open.

The reason for the invisible delivery men is a hidden side of New York City. It is a world of freight entrances, freight elevators and back hallways. They are not easy to see from the street, but they are there. The most you might see is a door open briefly, exposing the hidden corridors lined with plywood. Those who know the world of freight entrances can tell you of a busy world of deliveries going in and out, of trucks loading and unloading. Just feet away but out of sight hand hearing, the various offices get their paper and copiers and other necessities.

There are many occasions where we do not see all that is there. The office world and the intertwined freight world are an example of interconnected activities wherein one is seen and the other is concealed. Whether we see it or not, it is essential and it is there, working regardless of our attention. So it is that in the conduct of our own individual lives, we see but a portion of all that there is. Much may remain hidden, but it affects us directly or indirectly. This is something to consider thoughtfully.
