Keeping Secrets

Though I have pretty much laid it all out in my books, there are a few things I kept to myself. Most are speculative, or were personal treasures. They are not essential to your success. Anything worth having cannot be kept secret, provided you have matured to the point where you are ready for that insight. I said this 20 years ago, and it has proven itself time and again.

This does not mean we can give out all of our knowledge to everyone who comes. There are ideas and methods which require maturity. The individual needs the right experience, good sense and discretion to handle it wisely. Otherwise, the magician can hurt himself and others. It is very easy to do damage by accident. Too often, we see people who arrogantly think they are ready for a higher level of working, yet they have neither the ability nor the wisdom for it.

Giving a delicate magickal technique to an immature magician is like giving a loaded gun to a toddler.

The biggest problem with novices is “overkill.” They tend to hit everything with the equivalent of a howitzer, when only a light tap is required. Finesse is lacking. For many magickal operations, finesse is as essential as using the right amount of power.

A few days ago I equated rune work with a recipe. Did you figure it out? The trick to a recipe is not so much the ingredients themselves as in the portions. For example, you have a recipe using tomato puree, fennel, basil, oregano, rosemary and onions. Those are the ingredients. The trick is using them in the right amounts. Too much or too little of any ingredient changes the result. There is a big difference between using a pinch of fennel and a cup of fennel. One makes it taste wonderful, the other makes it inedible.

Just as we use proper portions in a recipe, so it is in magickal operations. Too much or too little of any potency can be the difference between success and irreparable harm. The ability to portion out one’s work takes time. It is not just an amount of an energy, but other things, as well. It may require you having a certain sensitivity to the person you are trying to heal. You might need to have experience to adjust the portions, or to replace them with other potencies. You also need to good common sense of when to help, how much help to give, and when you should not help at all. These are but a few of the factors that come from experience and discretion. They require magickal maturity.

A special warning to any who work magick for healing children. Just as the little ones cannot handle adult medicine, so they cannot handle adult strength magick. If healing or helping, adjust accordingly. Children require a delicate use of magickal power. Heal gently.

Did I give a recipe? Here are the amounts for each ingredient: 20 to 22 ounce can of tomato puree. 1 / 2 to 1 cup onion to taste, a pinch of fennel, 1 to 2 tablespoons of basil, 2 to 3 tablespoons of oregano, 1 to 1 ½ tablespoons of rosemary. Put it on the stove and start cooking on medium heat. In about 15 to 20 minutes, lower and let simmer. This is a nice “sweet sauce.” Goes well over Pasta, can also be cooked with sausage or meatballs.

Another use for this sauce, serves 2 people: get a piece of monkfish, small can or handful of mushrooms and a covered casserole dish. Lay mushrooms on the bottom. Cover with 1 / 2 of the sauce. Place monkfish on top. Now cover with the rest of the sauce. Cover and cook at 325 to 400. Check often. When the monkfish looks as white and cooked as cotton, it is ready. Cut monkfish in half. You can use the rest of the sauce over pasta.
